The People Behind the Magic

The Granny Cloud is powered by people who believe deeply in the right of every child to learn, explore and grow.

Honorary Director

Dr. Suneeta Kulkarni

Dr. Suneeta Kulkarni has a background in counselling and child development. With a doctorate in Psychology, she taught for more than 25 years at several universities while engaging in field projects directly with children, parents and teachers. She became involved in a major way, with Sugata Mitra’s work in 2008 as Research Manager for the OGEF project, through which the first Indian SOLEs were established.

Suneeta has directed The Granny Cloud since before its formal launch in May 2009. She served as Research Director for the School in the Cloud TED Prize Project from 2013–2016, leading the initiative with passion and persistence — demonstrating a powerful belief in the rights of all children to learn.

Former Core Team

A core team was already  functioning informally from 2012. As the project expanded, a more formalized group was brought together in 2014. This was added to over the years, to support Suneeta in processing Granny applicants and helping define policies and procedures.

Several other Grannies who had been with the initiative since the beginning years also contributed their insights in different ways. Between them, they had a vast experience as educators in varied countries and cultures — including working with children who were vulnerable in different ways. They had travelled far and wide and brought with them varying degrees of technical know-how, but all with a passion to ‘make a difference’.

Centre Coordinators

Every centre had coordinators — sometimes several — who facilitated the link between the Grannies and the children for specific sessions. Even as we operate in a single location today, the coordinators remain a key link in this collaboration.
